DETROIT -- For 17 years, Sharon Allen has coached, goaded, championed and directed the musicians and other members of the Cass Tech Marching Band.
Before she started in fall 1990, Cass Tech High School, touted as one of the city's gems, had no marching band.
"It's really an immense honor," said Allen. "We try to be the best."
That success, band members say, rests squarely on the shoulders of Allen, who was recruited specifically to be band director by David Snead, who was the principal at Cass Tech when Allen began there.
